GENEVA, N.Y. - The Castleton men's hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision at nationally ninth-ranked Hobart on Saturday in NEHC action.
Castleton drops to 3-10-4 (1-7-3 NEHC) and Hobart improves to 12-5-0 (6-4-0 NEHC), bouncing back after a 4-2 loss against Norwich on Friday.
Liam Lascelle made 16 saves to earn the shutout. Wyatt Pickrell saw 47 shots in of action in net for Castleton and surrendered all five goals. Freshman Kyle Alaverdy made 13 saves in 15:39 of shutout play in relief.
Hobart struck first at 6:06 of the opening period when Brandon Bistodeau slammed in a rebound after Zach Sternbach generated an offensive zone turnover.
Castleton's best chance to score in the opening frame was snuffed by a blocker save by Lascelle on a shot by Glenn Wiswell.
The Statesmen made it 2-0 at 1:34 of the middle period moments after a Spartan penalty expired when Travis Schneider. Then, Hobart went into the second intermission with a 3-0 cushion after Tanner Shaw scored on the power-play.
The Statesmen scored twice within 26 seconds at 3:55 and 4:21 of the third period to complete the scoring.
Sternbach had three assists to lead all scorers. Mike Faulkner had a pair of helpers while Bistodeau and Lawson Macdougall each finished with a goal and an assist.
Castleton will return home on Friday, Jan. 18 for a matchup against UMass Boston at 7 p.m.
