RUTLAND, Vt. – The Castleton men's hockey team fell 3-0 to Brockport in the WSYB/Catamount Radio Invitational finals on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles scored twice on the power play and a late empty-net goal sealed the deal to earn their first tournament victory since 2014.
Doc Gentzler and tournament Most Valuable Player Mitchell Parsons scored the power play goal for Brockport. Hunter Laslo converted the empty-net score with 33 seconds remaining in regulation. The sophomore captain also added an assist in the contest.
Danny Rock, Connor Hutchins, and Jake Colossanti all picked up one assist for the visitors. The Defending SUNYAC Goaltender of the Week, Jake Moore, made 26 saves.
Freshman Kyle Alaverdy made the start for Castleton in goal stopped 38 shots in his third collegiate appearance including 32 through the first two periods.
Brockport held a large territorial advantage, as seen in shots on goal, throughout the first period. Gentzler scored with 50 seconds remaining to break the deadlock and send the Golden Eagles into the break with a 1-0 lead, despite outshooting the Spartans 15-6 in the opening frame.
Alaverdy was relied on 17 times in the second period for Castleton as the contest went to the third period as a one-goal game with Brockport holding a 32-14 edge in shots on goal through 40 minutes.
Castleton applied pressure throughout the third period and skated away with a 12-6 shot advantage in the final stanza but could not get on the board as Moore earned his second shutout of the season.
Castleton will return home and get back to New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Friday at 7 p.m. against Suffolk before completing the six-game homestand against Johnson & Wales on Saturday at 4 p.m.
