HOLDERNESS, N.H. – The Castleton men's ice hockey team surrendered four power play goals en route to a 7-0 defeat at Plymouth State in a non-conference game on Tuesday.
Matt Volonnino scored twice for Plymouth State as it remained unbeaten with a 5-0-1 record. Ryan Stevens had a goal and three assists, while Drake Longaker registered a goal and an assist. Peter Laviolette, JR Barone, and Michael Covach each scored once for the Panthers. Victor Borgstrom pitched in with a pair of assists and seven other Plymouth State players recorded one helper on the evening.
Plymouth State struck first at 3:50 of the first period when Stevens took a shot from the point that snuck through traffic. Then, the Panthers scored four seconds into their first power play opportunity to snag a 2-0 advantage 5:18 into the contest.
Castleton's best chance to answer in the first period came in an extended 5-on-3 opportunity. Despite activity in the Plymouth State end throughout, the threat was subsided highlighted by Panther goalie Evan Morelli's stuff on Asa Palker's wrap-around attempt.
Castleton had the better of the chances for the majority of the second period, however Plymouth State converted on the power play again at 17:30 for the lone tally of the middle frame. Palker produced the best chance for Castleton again in the second, but his shot rang off the pipe and stayed out.
Plymouth State scored four in the final period, including two more with the man advantage as it skated away with a 37-22 edge in shots.
Freshman Kyle Alaverdy made 30 saves in his first-career start in goal for Castleton. Morelli turned aside all 22 shots he faced to earn his second shutout of the season.
Castleton returns home Friday for a pair of weekend non-conference games against SUNY Canton. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
