Men's Hockey Set to Wrap Up Regular Season at Home

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton men's hockey team is set to close out its regular season this weekend with New England Hockey Conference tilts against Skidmore on Friday at 7 p.m. and nationally-ranked Hobart on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Spartan Arena.

Prior to Saturday's contest against the Statesmen, Castleton will recognize its nine seniors in a brief pre-game ceremony.

Castleton (7-13-3, 3-12-1 NEHC) hosted both squads three weeks ago on Jan. 19-20 and this will be its third time facing the two teams this season. The Spartans enter the weekend tied with Skidmore in the conference standings, but hold the tiebreaker with two head-to-head wins against the Thoroughbreds.

The Spartans will look to build off a strong 5-1 victory over Southern Maine last Saturday. Caleb Fizer led the way with a career-high four points on two goals and two assists, while Dom Kuziak is coming off NEHC Rookie of the Week honors after scoring his first collegiate goal as part of a three-point night. Ryan Mulder was solid between the pipes, finishing with 25 saves to improve to 6-6-3 on the season.

Fizer is coming off a five-point weekend and leads the Spartans offensively with 16 points on six goals and 10 assists. Glenn Wiswell has netted a team-leading seven goals to go with five assists, while Trevor Hanna has tallied five goals and handed out seven assists thus far. Jacob Erwin and Ryan Smith have combined for 20 points on four goals and 16 assists.

Skidmore (5-17-1, 3-12-1 NEHC) has been playing well of late with impressive victories over Southern Maine, New England College, and UMass-Boston over the past two weekends. The Thoroughbreds are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to Babson last Saturday, marking their first loss since they were at Spartan Arena.

Brandon Borges is the leading scorer for Skidmore with 15 points on seven goals and eight assists. Matt Muzyka has recorded 12 points on four goals and eight assists, while Tim Allen sits third on the team with 10 points (3g, 7a). Brandon Kasel has been a mainstay in goal for the Thoroughbreds, as he is 4-16-0 with a .906 save percentage and 3.30 goals-against average in 20 starts.

Castleton claimed a 6-3 victory over Skidmore in the last meeting at Spartan Arena. Borges and Owen Campbell staked the Thoroughbreds to an early two-goal lead, but the Spartans netted six of the next seven goals en route to the win. Wiswell led the comeback effort with three points on two goals and an assist.

No. 12/11 Hobart (13-5-5, 10-3-3 NEHC) enters the weekend in second place in the conference standings after defeating UMass-Boston last Saturday, 5-0.

The Statesmen have 11 players in double-digit point totals for the season, led by Jonas Toupal's 23 (13 g, 10a). Lawson MacDougall leads the team with 16 assists and has registered 18 points overall, while Ben Greiner has collected 17 points on six goals and 11 points. Alexander Connal has been the top netminder for Hobart, making 13 starts and posting an 8-3-2 record with a .931 save percentage and 1.68 goals-against average.

The Statesmen have gotten the better of Castleton in the first two meetings with a 6-1 victory on their home ice in November and a 9-1 win at Spartan Arena Jan. 19. The third period has been Castleton's nemesis in the season series, as Hobart has outscored the Spartans, 8-0, in the final stanza.
