Men's Hockey Falls to Babson in NEHC Opener

RUTLAND, Vt. – The Castleton men's hockey team fell behind early in the first period and was never able to recover as visiting Babson pulled away with a 6-1 victory in the Spartans' home and New England Hockey Conference opener Friday night at Spartan Arena.

Trevor Hanna scored the lone Spartan goal on an assist from Glenn Wiswell. Bobby Hall and Matt McMorrow led the way for Babson with three points each. Hall netted two goals and added one assist, while McMorrow contributed two assists and had one goal of his own. Nick Rosa tallied two points on a goal and an assist for the Beavers.

Babson (1-1-0, 1-0-0 NEHC) jumped out to a lead just over eight minutes into the contest after forcing a turnover deep in the Spartans' zone. Hall sent a pass through the crease to Charlie Ackerman, who buried the one-timer at the 8:24 mark of the opening frame.

Castleton (1-1-0, 0-1-0 NEHC) fell victim to four penalties and spent over seven minutes in the penalty box in the first period. The Beavers capitalized, stretching their lead to two with a power-play goal at the 10:44 mark. Looking for the open lane, Babson completed several passes in the offensive zone before McMorrow found space at the doorstep and gave the Beavers a 2-0 advantage. The visitors stretched their lead once more with 29 seconds left in the first period as Hall buried a rebound off an initial shot from Zach Phelps to give Babson a comfortable 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

After a scoreless second period in which Castleton had four power-play opportunities, Babson halted any momentum the Spartans looked to gain in the third period with Hall's second goal of the contest just under four minutes into the final stanza. Hanna scored a wrap-around goal less than two minutes later, but the Beavers struck twice more en route to the 6-1 victory.

Ryan Mulder made 24 saves but fell to 1-1 on the season in goal. Bryan Botcher stopped 16 saves over two-plus periods, before Matt Pompa stopped four shots over the final 14 minutes to secure the victory for the Beavers.

Babson outshot Castleton, 30-21, in the contest. The Spartans finished 0-for-4 on the power play, while Babson converted on three of seven opportunities with the man advantage. Castleton won the faceoff battle, 44-35.

The Spartans return to action Saturday for another key NEHC tilt against UMass-Boston starting at 4 p.m. at Spartan Arena.
