CASTLETON, Vt. – After helping their posting two wins to lock up a home playoff contest, Ryan O'Toole and Troy Taylor of the Castleton men's hockey team have been honored by the New England Hockey Conference as Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced on Monday afternoon.
O'Toole had a career week for the Spartans, racking up five points on three goals and two assists as he helped Castleton lock up the No. 4 seed and a home game in the NEHC quarterfinals. The junior opened the week with a two-goal performance in a 3-1 win on the road at Southern Maine, including the game-winning goal late in the first period and an insurance goal in the third after USM had closed the gap to one score. On Saturday, O'Toole chipped in with a goal--the first of the game--and two assists. The five-point week helped him achieve a new single-season high in points for his career, and made him one of nine Spartans with double-digit points on the season.
Taylor had a solid week for the second week in a row for Castleton, providing five points on a goal and four assists for the Spartan offense. The rookie blueliner was also +2 and wasn't on the ice for either goal Castleton allowed. In Friday's 3-1 win at Southern Maine, Taylor registered an assist on the game's first goal, before coming back with a career-best four-point game on Saturday at Daniel Webster. Taylor had two points in each of the final two periods of that contest, racking up two assists in the second period, and a goal and an assist in the third period of a 10-1 road win. Overall this season, he has 14 points on three goals and 11 assists, ranking him fourth on the team and second among Spartan defensemen.
This is the first time this season that either player has been honored, and the third week this season that has featured a Spartan being recognized by the conference. To view the full NEHC release, click here.
