CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton men's hockey team wrapped up the regular season on a five-game unbeaten streak, going 3-0-2 over that span, securing a home contest in the upcoming New England Hockey Conference postseason tournament.
The squad will host Skidmore in the quarterfinal round, which earned the fifth seed after finishing one point behind Castleton in the standings. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. this Saturday, February 18.
The Spartans earned the fourth seed in the tournament after finishing the regular season with a record of 9-5-4 in NEHC play and 10-9-6 overall. It was the first season under new head coach Bill Silengo, and the Spartans first winning season since the 2013-14 campaign.
Castleton and Skidmore played to back-to-back draws in the regular season, playing to a 2-2 tie in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., before tying the following night at Spartan Arena, 3-3. Castleton has the upper hand in the head-to-head series in recent years, losing just one time to Skidmore in the past three seasons.
Norwich earned the top seed for the NEHC tournament, as well as a bye into the semifinal round. The Cadets will host the lowest remaining seed following the quarterfinal round. No. 2-seeded New England College hosts No. 7 Southern Maine, while No. 3 Babson plays host to No. 6 UMass-Boston to round out the quarterfinal matchups.
