RUTLAND, Vt. – The Castleton University men's golf team held on to its day-one lead at the Castleton Invitational, outlasting the field to win the event for the second consecutive year at Rutland Country Club on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans followed up a team score of 322 on Saturday with a 326 on Sunday, giving them a total of 648—13 shots ahead of second-place Elms College (335-326-661). SUNY Cobleskill notched a third-place finish, shooting 336-342-678.
Jacob Erwin claimed top medalist honors, carding rounds of 78 and 79 to total 157, besting teammate Nicholas Ojala (79-79-158) by one stroke. Jordan Ayer improved on his opening-round 85 by four shots, checking in with an 81 on Sunday to give him a total of 166. Tripp Norris posted rounds of 80-87 to total 167, while Caleb Fizer finished the weekend 92-88-180.
Erwin led the field par-4 scoring with an average of 4.42, while Ojala tied for the lead in par-5 scoring, playing them at even par. Ojala also led the field in total pars, with 20, while Erwin carded 19 pars on the weekend to finish second in the field.
First-round leader David Albright of Northern Vermont University-Johnson finished the weekend 74-86-160 to finish in third place, while Elms' Chris Soderberg (79-82-161) and Billy Marchand (80-82-162) rounded out the top five.
The Spartans are back in action on October 7 and 8 at the Southern Maine Fall Classic in Gorham, Maine.
