Men's Golf Leads the Way After Opening Round at Castleton Invitational

RUTLAND, Vt. – After one day of competition at its own tournament, the Castleton men's golf team leads the six-team field after firing the lowest team round of the day at Rutland Country Club.

Castleton's round of 322 bests Elms College and SUNY Cobleskill, both of which shot a 336 on the day. NVU-Johnson is in fourth place with a total of 345, while Western Connecticut State is in fifth with a 385 and Gordon is in sixth with a 393.

Jacob Erwin led the way once again for the Spartans, sitting second overall after firing a team-best score of 78 that included a pair of back-nine birdies. Nicholas Ojala was right on Erwin's heels, shooting a score of 79, stringing together 10 consecutive pars in the middle of his round to sit in a three-way tie for third place after the first day. Tripp Norris (T-6) fired his best round of the season, carding an 80 on the day, while Jordan Ayer (T-10) shot an 85 and Caleb Fizer (T-19) checked in with a total of 92. 

Northern Vermont University-Johnson's David Albright leads all individuals after posting a round of 74 on the first day. Elms' Chris Soderberg and SUNY Cobleskill's Cody Latimer are tied for third place with Ojala after shooting opening-round scores of 79. 

The Castleton Invitational concludes on Sunday morning with tee times beginning at 8 a.m.
