BREWSTER, Mass. – The Castleton University men's golf team began play at the 2017 New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Division III Championships, ending Sunday's first round in 18th place in the tournament held at The Captains Golf Course.
Senior Jon Benson and freshman Thomas Kingsley tied for Castleton's low round of the day, with each player shooting 81 (+9) to end up in a tie for 42nd place. Darwin Norris shot 87 (+15) to finish the opening round in a tie for 78th place, ahead of Jordan Ayer in 85th place at 90 (+18) and Michael Plaisance in 91st place at 94 (+22).
As a team, the Spartans combined to shoot 339 (+51), six strokes ahead of the University of New England and just seven strokes outside the top 15 teams. Husson University holds the first round lead at 298 (+10), five strokes ahead of Rhode Island College. Husson's Daulton Wickenden was the only player to post a score under par with a 69 (-3), leading the individual standings by three strokes over Jason Raichle of Springfield College.
After playing the Port Course in the first round, the NEIGA Division III Men's Championship will move to the Starboard Course for the second and final round Monday, Oct. 23. Castleton will be paired with University of New England and UMass-Dartmouth and tee off from the 10th hole from 8:30 a.m. to 9:06 a.m.
