RUTLAND, Vt. – The Castleton University men's golf team could not hold off a comeback from one of the other teams, as SUNY Cobleskill rallied to win both the individual and team titles at the 2017 Castleton Invitational, which concluded Sunday at the par-70 Rutland Country Club.
Thanks to the only two single-round scores under 80, the Fighting Tigers moved to the top of the leaderboard after shooting 321 In the second round for a two-day total of 656. SUNY Cobleskill's Dylan Mulvihill earned medalist honors by following his first round 80 with an 81 Sunday, finishing ahead of teammate Nate Stanton by two strokes.
Jon Benson was Castleton's highest finisher, ending up in sixth place after shooting 87 in the second round to go along with a first round 81 for a combined score of 168. Jacob Erwin finished in a tie for seventh place at 169 after posting scores of 81 Saturday and 88 Sunday.
Justin Brown was the only Spartan to improve from the first day to the second, shooting 85 in the final round to move into a tie for ninth place at 171 with teammate Jordan Ayer, who shot 89 Sunday to go along with an opening-round 82. Mark Shroyer shot 93 Sunday to finish in 13th place at 184.
Castleton will take a couple of weeks off from competition before heading to Gorham, Maine, for the Southern Maine Fall Classic Oct. 8-9.
