MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Castleton men's golf team played the first round Saturday of the Duke Nelson Invitational, ending the day in 20th place at the tournament hosted by Middlebury College at the Ralph Myhre Golf Course.
Jordan Ayer shot Castleton's low round of the day, finishing in a tie for 64th place after posting a score of 78 (+7). Jon Benson and Justin Brown are in a tie for 88th place after the first round, each with an 18-hole score of 81 (+10).
Thomas Kingsley shot 91 (+20), and Caleb Fizer finished his first round with a score of 94 (+23). As a team, Castleton shot 331 (+47) to finish the opening round in 20th place in the team standings, six strokes ahead of Wesleyan and Salem State.
Williams College sits atop the team leaderboard at 287 (+3), two shots in front of Babson College. Babson's Lane Bohman, Tom Egbers of St. Lawrence, and Beau David of Williams, playing as an individual, were the only three golfers to open the tournament below par, tying for the individual lead at 70 (-1).
The second and final round of the Duke Nelson Invitational is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 17, at 9 a.m.
