ST. GEORGE, Vt. – Led by the performance of Jordan Ayer, who earned medalist honors, the Castleton University golf team opened the 2017 fall season with a team victory at the Johnson Invitational Friday at the Rocky Ridge Golf Club.
Ayer shot 83 (+11), one stroke ahead of second place finisher Jeremy Quelch of Norwich. It was five strokes better than his score on the same course last year. Ayer finished two strokes ahead of teammate Jon Benson, whose 85 (+13) was good enough for a third place finish.
Jacob Erwin and Darwin Norris contributed to the Spartans' team title, finishing in a tie for fifth place with an 18-hole score of 90 (+18). Mark Shroyer also competed in the season-opening event, finishing in a tie for 18th place in the individual standings.
As a team, Castleton posted a combined score of 348 (+60), 21 strokes in front of the host Johnson Badgers. Norwich finished in third place, just two strokes behind Johnson, followed by Paul Smith's College in fourth place.
Castleton returns to action next weekend for the Middlebury Fall Classic, to be held at the Lake Placid Club in Lake Placid, N.Y., Sept. 9-10.
