SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Castleton University men's basketball team fell at the hands of Westfield State, 76-52, in a non-conference battle in the Sig Makofski Invitational hosted by Union College on Saturday afternoon.
Eric Shaw had a team-high 11 points off the bench for the Spartans (2-2), while Tank Roberson dished out a season-high nine assists to go with five points. Ben Mrowka and Cameron Edwards added eight points apiece for Castleton while Igor Almeida had a team-high six rebounds.
Westfield State was led by a trio of scorers in double-digits, as Marcus Collins potted a game-high 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting, adding 12 rebounds for a double-double. Peter Mafo added 15 points and Christopher Prophet had 12.
The Owls shot 42.6 percent (29-of-68) from the floor, while Castleton posted a 35.2 percent (19-of-54) from the field. Westfield State converted on 9-of-17 threes in the contest while Castleton cashed in on just 6-of-21 attempts from long range. The Owls dominated the turnover battle, as Castleton coughed it up 19 times to Westfield State's nine.
The two teams battled closely for the first six-plus minutes of action, as each side traded buckets to the tune of a 12-11 lead for the Owls with just more than 13 minutes to play in the opening half. Westfield State followed a Spartan layup with a pair of triples to push the lead to seven points. An 8-2 run later in the half pushed the Owls' lead to 16 points, 44-28, before a pair of free throws at the end of the frame made it 48-30 at the break.
Westfield State came out of the locker room firing, opening the second half on a 10-2 run to make its lead 26 points at 58-32. Shaw ended the run with a pair of threes for Castleton on back-to-back possessions, jump starting a 10-0 run for Castleton where he hit three shots from long range to make it 58-42. The Owls continued to pull away, however, outscoring Castleton 28-22 in the second half to close out the contest.
The Spartans will take on the loser of the matchup between NVU-Lyndon and Union in tomorrow's consolation game of the Sig Makofski Invitational. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
