CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Castleton University men's basketball team lost to Pine Manor College, 75-63, Wednesday night in a non-conference contest.
Senior Pavin Parrish led the Spartans in scoring, tying his season high with 16 points. Jordan Nelson shot 5-of-6 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line for 14 points along with three rebounds and three assists, while Nathaniel Kingsley once again reached double figures in scoring with 13 points and five rebounds.
Kingsley scored Castleton's first four points of the game, but Pine Manor responded with an 18-4 scoring run, punctuated by a three-pointer from Jamel Hamans. A layup by Joshua Gause with 48 seconds remaining in the first half gave the Gators a 35-18 advantage at halftime.
Parrish would hit all three of his three-pointers early in the second half to close the Spartan deficit to 11 at 45-34, and then a traditional three-point play by Nelson followed by an offensive rebound and jumper by Kingsley drew Castleton within six at 45-39. Five straight points by Nelson brought the Spartans within four at 48-44, but the Gators responded with a 14-3 scoring run over the next six minutes to extend their lead to 62-47 with 7:27 left in the second half.
Pine Manor (6-5) put the game away with a 7-0 scoring run, starting with a three-pointer by Eugene Everett. A jumper by Louis Savage gave the Gators their biggest lead of the night at 22 points (75-53), but Castleton kept competing until the final horn, scoring the final 10 points of the contest, six of them by Luke Czaplewski.
Five players reached double figures in scoring for the Gators, led by Steven Collins with 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists and Savage with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Keith Brown scored 11 points off the bench, while Hamans and Nathan Serrano contributed 10 points apiece.
As a team, Pine Manor shot 43.8 percent (28-of-64) from the floor, including 12-of-28 from behind the three-point line, and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the free throw line. The Gators won the rebounding battle, 38-33, and scored 17 points off 26 Castleton turnovers.
The Spartans shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field, including 7-of-25 from behind the three-point line, and 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the free throw line. Castleton did score 18 points off 21 Pine Manor turnovers.
Castleton (4-7, 2-3 NAC) returns to action Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, with a conference game at Lyndon starting at 3 p.m.
