CASTLETON, Vt. -- Led by freshman forward Kaitlin Bardellini's three goals and two assists, the Castleton University field hockey team defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 6-0 in a non-conference contest at Dave Wolk Stadium Wednesday evening.
The scoring began in the first quarter as the Spartans (5-4) struck first despite the early offensive pressure by the Engineers (0-9). Bardellini scored her first goal of the game as she slotted the ball in from close range with just under five minutes into the game. The freshman forward would quickly double the Spartans' lead as she maneuvered through the Engineers' defense to score her second goal of the game at the 10:58 mark of the first quarter.
Gabriella Hunt would join the action in the second quarter as she scored her ninth goal of the season at the 17:11 mark. Bardellini sent a pass into the striking circle and Hunt pushed it past goaltender Jen Richardson to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
Bardellini would complete her hat trick at the 38:47 mark of the third quarter as she once again found the back of the net in a crowd full of defenders. Bardellini now has two hat tricks this season and has scored seven goals in the past four games. She also leads the team in goals (10) and points (25).
Goaltender Tashia Pashby-Rockwood would get the win as she kept the shutout while recording seven saves for the Spartans.
