CASTLETON, Vt. – Deanna Tyson, Associate Dean for Athletics and Recreation at Castleton University, has announced that Christine Kemp will take over as head coach of the Spartan field hockey team, effective June 10, 2018.
Kemp comes to Castleton after five years as the assistant coach at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where she helped the Thoroughbreds to an 80-27 record (.748). While Kemp was an assistant coach, Skidmore won three Liberty League championships, advanced to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament quarterfinals in 2014 and 2016, and reached the national semifinals in 2013.
Earning her bachelor's degree in 2011, Kemp was a two-sport athlete at Skidmore, excelling in field hockey where she was a three-time All-American and three-time Liberty League Player of the Year. She still holds the school records for most assists in a single season (22) and most career assists (62). She also played basketball for the Thoroughbreds, earning the team's defensive player of the year award as a senior captain in 2010-11.
"Christine's success as a student-athlete and a coach, as well as her preparation for the interview process here, made her a strong candidate to lead our field hockey program," Tyson said. "I look forward to seeing her continue the progression the team has made."
Kemp started her coaching career at Bridgewater State University, joining the field hockey program as an assistant coach from 2011 to 2013 while pursuing her master's degree. The Bears compiled a 31-11 record over two seasons, winning back-to-back MASCAC championships and qualifying for the ECAC Divison III Field Hockey Tournament in both years, reaching the semifinals in 2011 and the finals in 2012.
Kemp is also currently the futures head coach and site director for USA Field Hockey, developing individual skills, team game, and offensive and defensive strategies in a training-only environment for U19 players. She also assisted in the start-up in March 2017 of the Thoroughbreds Club, a Saratoga County-based club program for interested field hockey players ranging in age from seven years old to 18 years of age.
"I would like to thank Castleton President Dr. Karen Scolforo and Associate Dean for Athletics and Recreation Deanna Tyson, as well as the search committee, for this wonderful opportunity to be the next field hockey coach at Castleton University. I am honored and looking forward to getting to know the student-athletes, colleagues, and the community, while working diligently to continue to grow the success of the field hockey program," said Kemp.
In 2017, the Castleton field hockey team finished 11-9 overall, its first winning season since 2013, and qualified for the NAC East Tournament as the third seed. The field hockey program is one of 18 Spartan teams moving to the Little East Conference starting in the 2018-19 academic year.
