Spartans Face Keene State & Husson In Pair Of Challenging Contests

CASTLETON, Vt. – Currently in the midst of a three-game winning streak, the Castleton University field hockey team heads into a pair of challenging matchups against regional opponents, including a conference contest.

Led by two-time North Atlantic Conference Field Hockey Rookie of the Week, Gabriella Hunt, the Spartans (8-6, 2-1 NAC) will travel south and east to Keene State College for a 6:30 p.m. matchup on Thursday. Hunt has scored four goals during the squad's current winning streak to total eight for the season, along with five assists for 21 points.

The Owls are 9-5 in 2017 while sitting atop the Little East Conference with an 8-1 slate. A winner of its last two, Keene State is led by the freshman duo of Nina Bruno and Rachel Loseby.

Bruno leads the team and the Little East with 13 goals while placing in a tie for first in the conference with a team-leading 32 points. Meanwhile, Loseby has been a wall in the cage for the Owls, surrendering just six goals in nearly 500 minutes of play, thus far.

Last year, Keene State defeated Castleton 9-1 at Spartan Stadium. Co-captain Sarah Wells notched three shots-on-goal, while senior Emily Lowell notched the lone Spartan score.

Lowell has led the team for much of the season, tallying a team-high 11 goals, which includes two hat tricks to this point. She has also added a couple of assists to total 24 points.

The Brandon, Vt. native and fellow seniors Leah Holland, Rachel Holland, Mariah Linnett, Erica Hoffman and Stephanie Van Fleet look to down Husson University during Saturday's Senior Day game, which is slated to start at 12 p.m.

In a game that carries significant playoff implications in the NAC, the Spartans look to end their current three-contest losing streak against the Eagles. So far this season, Husson is 7-3 overall, including an unscathed 3-0 in league action.

Sadie Royer leads the opposing team with eight scores and 18 points, while Arika Brochu and Lauren Russell have four assists each. In the cage, Anne Marie Provencal has a 1.75 goals-against average over the team's 10 games.

Following these games, Castleton returns to action at 6 p.m. on Wednesday as it welcomes Fitchburg State to Spartan Stadium for a nonconference contest.
