CASTLETON, Vt. – The 2017 Castleton University field hockey schedule has been finalized, featuring three games against teams that participated in the 2016 NCAA Tournament as well as nine home contests at Spartan Stadium.
The season begins with three consecutive road games, starting Friday, Sept. 1, at Union College, followed by contests at Morrisville State Saturday, Sept. 2, and at Middlebury College, one of the NCAA Tournament squads on the slate, Wednesday, Sept. 6. The home opener takes place Saturday, Sept. 9, against Mount Holyoke College, followed by a game against Plymouth State at the New Hampton Turf Field Tuesday, Sept. 12.
Castleton starts a five-game homestand Thursday, Sept. 14, against Westfield State, before taking on SUNY Oneonta during Homecoming Weekend Saturday, Sept. 16. The home stretch continues against RPI Wednesday, Sept. 20, followed by the North Atlantic Conference opener against Colby-Sawyer Saturday, Sept. 23, and the final game of the homestand against Becker Sunday, Sept. 24.
The Spartans will travel to face defending NAC champion Maine-Farmington Saturday, Sept. 30. Castleton then heads out for consecutive road games at Wells College Tuesday, Oct. 3, and at Keuka College Wednesday, Oct. 4.
Castleton returns home to take on Thomas College Saturday, Oct. 7, before a road game at NCAA Tournament participant Keene State Thursday, Oct. 12. The Spartans wrap up the home schedule against Husson Saturday, Oct. 14, and against Fitchburg State Thursday, Oct. 19. The regular season concludes in New Hampshire with games at New England College Saturday, Oct. 21, and at Rivier Sunday, Oct. 22.
The top four teams in the NAC East Division advance to the postseason tournament, with the semifinals taking place Wednesday, Oct. 25, and the finals set for Saturday, Oct. 28. The winner of the NAC East Tournament will take on the winner of the NAC West, made up of schools from the NEAC, in the crossover game to determine the recipient of the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Led by fourth-year head coach Jessica Kischko, the Castleton field hockey team looks to continue the improvement it has shown over the past two seasons and reach the NAC Tournament for the first time since 2014. Entering their final year in the NAC, the Spartans have won three NAC Tournament titles: 2008, 2012, and 2013.
