WELLESLEY, Mass. – Devin Hayes, a four-year member of the Castleton University baseball team, has been selected to participate in the 2017 New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-Star Game, taking place Friday, June 2, starting at 12 noon at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I.
Hayes will compete on the College team, made up of juniors and seniors from Division II and III schools in New England. The University team, composed of players from New England Division I programs, will provide the opposition and currently has a 24-12-2 all-time series advantage over the College team, looking for its first win since 2010.
Hayes has earned postseason recognition from several organizations, including First Team All-NAC, All-ECAC New England, and ABCA/Rawlings and NEIBA All-Region honors. In the 2017 season, he posted a 7-1 record in nine starts with five complete games, a 1.58 earned run average, and 59 strikeouts in 62 2/3 innings of work while allowing just 49 hits, 12 runs, and nine walks. Hayes finished the year 12th in the country in WHIP (0.93), 16th in ERA, and tied for 20th in complete games, helping the Spartan pitching staff lead Division III in earned run average (2.24) and shutouts (11).
Over the past four seasons, Hayes appeared in 38 games, making 31 starts and compiling an overall record of 19-4 with nine complete games, a 2.66 earned run average, and 183 strikeouts in 203 1/3 innings on the mound. In the 2016 NCAA Tournament, he pitched eight innings in Castleton's 3-1 victory over Union, allowing just three hits, two walks, and one run while striking out nine batters.
The Castleton University baseball team won its fourth consecutive North Atlantic Conference title and advanced to the New York Regional of the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament. The Spartans completed the 2017 campaign with a 34-10 overall record, tying the school record for most wins in a single season.
