CASTLETON, Vt. – The Castleton baseball team has claimed the top seed and hosting rights for the 2017 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Baseball Championship Tournament, which begins with opening-round games on Saturday, May 6.
The Spartans (30-7 overall) captured the top seed in the conference tournament after posting a league-best 21-3 record in NAC play. Castleton opened its NAC slate with two wins against New England College, before dropping two to Colby-Sawyer on April 12. The Spartans rebounded by winning 19 of their last 20 regular season conference games, highlighted by four-game sweeps of UMaine-Farmington, NEC, Thomas, and Husson.
The four-team double elimination tournament will begin with three games on Saturday, May 6. Top-seeded Castleton will host fourth-seeded Husson at 9:30 a.m. and second-seeded New England College will take on third-seeded Lyndon at 12:30 p.m. Game 3 will see the losers of game 1 and game 2 fight to remain in the tournament at 3:30 p.m.
NAC predetermined tiebreaking procedures were used to seed teams with identical conference winning percentages.
Tournament action will continue throughout the weekend, as two games are slated for Sunday, May 7, culminating with the final day of the tournament scheduled for Monday, May 8.
The NAC tournament champion will earn automatic qualification into the upcoming 2017 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.
