Poland, Mikell Garner ECAC Weekly Honors

CASTLETON, Vt. – Sophomore Deagan Poland and freshman Davis Mikell have added more awards for their performances last week, as they have been named Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Region Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, announced Tuesday by the league office.

Poland had a stellar week for Castleton, leading the offense with a .565 batting average (13-for-23), including a .667 (4-for-6) clip in conference action to help lead the Spartans to a doubleheader sweep of New England College. The sophomore outfielder enjoyed four multi-hit games out of the leadoff spot and drove in two runs as part of back-to-back 4-for-4 performances at the plate against New England College and Anna Maria. Poland swiped 10 bags on the week and leads the conference with 15 stolen bases on the season. Leading the squad in batting average (.413) and on-base percentage (.471), the Williston native has reached base in every game this season with a hit in 14 of the team's 16 contests.

Mikell made an impact on both offense and defense last week, blasting two home runs at the plate and earning his second win of the season on the mound. The freshman batted .368 on the week (7-for-19) with a .737 slugging percentage and 10 RBI. In the doubleheader sweep of New England College, Mikell went 3-for-6 with two RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. He drove in a season-high four runs against Anna Maria and capped off his offensive production with two home runs and three RBI against Clark University. Mikell is tied for first in the NAC with two home runs and 14 RBI on the season. With a complete-game victory over previously ranked No. 2 SUNY Cortland already under his belt this season, Mikell improved to 2-0 on the mound with six strikeouts and one earned run over 6.0 innings pitched against Anna Maria.

Mikell added his third home run of the season Tuesday and enjoyed another quality outing on the mound Wednesday against Colby-Sawyer, allowing just one earned run with a career-high 10 strikeouts over 7.0 innings pitched. The Williston native leads the NAC with a 1.23 ERA and has 25 strikeouts in 22.0 innings pitched this season.
