Mikell Named NAC Pitcher and Rookie of the Week

CASTLETON, Vt. – Coming off a stellar week both at the plate and on the mound, freshman Davis Mikell of the Castleton baseball team has been named North Atlantic Conference Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon by the league office.

Mikell batted .412 (7-for-17) in four games this week with four runs scored and an RBI. He opened the season with back-to-back three-hit performances in Friday's doubleheader against Apprentice and nationally-ranked Tufts. Mikell led the offense with a 3-for-5 effort with two runs scored in the win over the Builders, before going 3-for-4 against the No. 11 Jumbos with an RBI and a run scored off preseason All-American pitcher Speros Varinos. With the Spartans trailing 4-0 in the eighth, Mikell sparked a rally with an RBI-double to score the first of three runs in the inning for the Spartans.

The freshman one-upped his opening day performance with a memorable outing on the mound in game two of Saturday's doubleheader against No. 2 Cortland State. In his first career start up against the perennial World Series contenders, Mikell was up to the task and pitched his way to victory with a complete game effort. After surrendering two runs over the first two innings, Mikell found his groove and went on to strike out six over the next four innings without allowing a run. Striking out nine total in the game, the Williston native went the distance allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits to help Castleton capture the win over its highest ranked opponent in program history.
