NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Castleton captured its tenth straight win this afternoon with a 9-3 victory over the Norwich Cadets in non-conference action at Garrity Field.
Nick Swim pushed his hitting streak to 17 games with a two-hit performance that included his third home run of the season and three RBIs. Dan Errico drove in two runs via sacrifice fly, while Dillon Benham finished 1-for-2 on the day with one run scored and one RBI. For Norwich, Kyle Lamorey led the team with two hits, whereas Brian Baker and Jacob Drew recorded one RBI apiece.
Luke Salerno maintained his perfect start to the year, moving to 4-0 overall after tossing seven innings of three-run (two earned) baseball with five strikeouts. Aaron Smith, meanwhile, tossed two innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts in his fourth appearance in relief this season. Brian Albert suffered the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) in two innings pitched. Chandler Whipple, Anthony Carter and Pater Madsen pitched the final seven innings ofr Norwich, allowing a combined five runs with five strikeouts.
The Spartans got off to a quick start with five runs in the opening two innings of play. Deagan Poland scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch before Errico's first sacrifice fly of the day brought home Taylor Vile to make it 2-0 in the top of the first. Swim picked up his third homer of the season in the following frame with a three-run shot to give Castleton a five-run lead.
Norwich got on the board in the bottom of the second after Drew's deep fly to right field brought home a run and cut the hosts' deficit back to four. However, the Spartans scored three times in the fourth and never looked back en route to the 9-3 victory.
Castleton has six games remaining this week, traveling to Henniker, N.H. to face off with the New England College Pilgrims in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader tomorrow afternoon before facing the Husson Eagles at Spartan Field for a critical four-game set this weekend.
