CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton looks to push its winning streak to double digits this afternoon when it takes on the Norwich Cadets at 3:30 pm in non-conference play at Garrity Field.
The Spartans are currently on a nine-game winning streak and stand at 17-9 overall and 10-2 in the North Atlantic Conference following an upset victory over 19th-ranked Amherst College on Sunday, 11-6. Nick Swim was fantastic in that contest, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and five RBIs, while Taylor Vile added two RBIs and two runs scored.
So far this season, Swim has been the lynchpin in Castleton's lineup, hitting a conference-best .423 with two home runs, 31 RBIs and 32 runs scored. He is currently on a 16-game hitting streak and has posted multi-hit games in each of the last five contests. Dan Errico holds a .343 average with 11 extra-base hits, two home runs, 21 RBIs, 16 runs scored and a .472 on-base percentage, while Zach Bahan has hit safely in 14 straight games with a .333 mark.
The team's success at the plate has translated to the mound, as the pitching staff sports a collective ERA of 3.51 with 12 complete games. Sam Spencer has been the club's ace, posting a 4-2 mark with four complete games and a 3.00 ERA in 42 innings of work. Charles Stapleford is 4-1 overall with a 2.17 ERA, while Michael LaBeau has notched 18 strikeouts in 13.2 innings pitched.
Norwich heads into the midweek matchup with a 3-21 record after Suffolk outscored the Cadets 19-2 on Sunday en route to the doubleheader sweep. The Rams took the opener by the score of 10-0 before capturing the two-game set with a 9-2 victory in the finale.
The Cadets have struggled at the plate this year, posting a team average of .212 while scoring 2.21 runs per game. Brian Baker and Kevin Lynch have anchored the squad, with respective averages of .327 and .280. Baker has collected 18 hits with four RBIs and four runs scored in 55 at-bats. Caldwell, meanwhile, has recorded a team-high 21 hits with eight walks, 14 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. Another top contributor is Brandon Pedley, who is hitting .233 with 14 hits and a team-leading seven RBIs.
On the mound, the Cadets have posted a 7.25 ERA with 165 runs allowed in 157.2 innings pitched. Kaleb Smith is 0-6 on the year with a 5.54 ERA and 11 strikeouts, while Brian Whaley has a team-best 4.03 ERA with just 13 walks and a 2-2 mark. Kyle Farquharson, meanwhile, holds a 0-4 spot in 19.2 innings of work.
The last matchup between these two programs took place in the 2013 season when Castleton took down Norwich, 23-1. Tyler Lord went 1-for-2 in that game with four walks and five runs scored, while Conner Johnson tossed three innings of one-run relief to close out the contest.
