Castleton Picked to Repeat as NEAC East Champs

CASTLETON, Vt. - Defending conference champion Castleton State College has been chosen as the baseball preseason favorite of the North Eastern Athletic Conference East Division in a vote conducted by the league's coaches. The Spartans, who finished 14-2 in conference, won a three game series against West Divisoin champion SUNYIT to claim the NEAC title.

Castleton returns six starters including infielders Ryan Zielinski and David Brandt along with designated hitter Matt Eisenhuth. Zielinski, the 2010 NEAC East Rookie of the Year, led the division in RBI (50), hits (74), home runs (6) and runs scored (54) while Brandt led the division in batting average (.429) The Spartans received four first place votes and a total of 24 points in the preseason poll.

Husson placed second in the poll with 21 points and one first place vote. The Eagles return nine starters and will be led by three-time all-conference member and 2010 Division Player of the Year Ethan Guerette.

NAC members Castleton, Husson, Lyndon St., Maine-Farmington and Thomas play in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) as associate members in the East Division. Each division will hold a championship and the two divisional champions will meet for a three game series to determine the conference champion. The conference winner will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
