BANGOR, Maine – Husson University broke open a 5-4 game in the eigth inning, touching Castleton State College's bullpen for five runs en route to a 10-4 win in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division Baseball Tournament action.
The Eagles improve to 26-15 overall on the season and advance to play the winner of Castleton/Thomas in game five to be played later today. The Spartans record falls to 19-19.
Junior pitcher Nate Adams (Frankfort, Maine) earned the win going the distance allowing six hits, four runs (two earned), one walk and three strikeouts. Seth Harrington (Bennington, Vt.) was handed the loss on seven innings pitched, yielding seven hits, five runs (four earned), two walks and seven strikeouts.
Castleton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as second baseman Ryan Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y.) tripled to leadoff the frame. After Jack Lancelin (Chatham, N.Y.) struck out swinging, Matt Eisenhuth (So. Newfane, Vt.) doubled to right center giving the Spartans a 1-0 advantage. Eisenhuth came around to later in the inning with two outs as shortstop Aaron Zrenda (East Lyme, Conn.) legged out an infield single to his counterpart on the diamond to plate Eisenhuth for a 2-0 score.
Husson responded over the next three innings with four runs on five hits including a two-run home run by first baseman Chris Maguire (Orland, Maine) in the fourth. Shawn Smith (Winterport, Maine) led off both scoring innings with singles sparking the offense. After Maguire's homer in the fourth, Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, Maine) roped a triple to left center and Tom Crews (Bangor, Maine) singled to left field to bring him home pushing the gap to 4-2 for the Eagles.
In the top of the fifth, Husson made it 5-2 as Jake Arthers (Belfast, Maine) eventually came around to score Vanidestine's RBI single down the left field line after reaching on a fielding error to leadoff the frame.
Castleton posted two runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 5-4 taking advantage of a fielding error by Vanidestine in left field. With one out, Zielinski double to right center and Eisenhuth followed with a single to left field that Vanidestine then misplayed allowing both runners to score.
The Spartans rally fell short as the Eagles pounded out five runs on six hits over the next two innings to seal the victory. Castleton reliever Billy Kosachook (Ontario, N.Y.) tossed one inning of relief giving up two runs (both earned), one three hits while Paola Audino (Westerlo, N.Y.) completed one inning yielding three runs (all earned), on three hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
Smith paced Husson's offense going 2-for-5 with three runs scored while Vanidestine collected three hits, scored three runs and drove one run in. Zielinski went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Eisenhuth went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one run knocked in to pick up Castleton's only multi-hit performances on the day.
