BANGOR, Maine – Tyler Erickson (Naugatuck, Conn.) pitched a complete-game four-hitter to lead Castleton State College to a 4-1 win over Thomas in the opening round of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) East Division baseball playoffs Friday at the Winkin Baseball Complex.
Erickson struck out 10 and allowed one earned run on four hits and no walks.
The Spartans scratched out seven hits off Thomas starter, Jake Chamblee (South Berwick, Maine) who went the distance for the Terriers, allowing three earned, walking two and striking out two.
Lead-off hitter Ryan Zelinski (Schenectady, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Castleton offense. Second baseman Peter Wagner (Brattleboro, Vt.) went 1-for-3 with a run scored out of the number-eight slot in the lineup, while David Brandt (Contoocook, N.H.) went 2-for-2 with a walk and scored twice out of the nine hole.
The lone Thomas run didn't come until the seventh, as Ben Goodall (Norway, Maine) recorded the only extra base hit off Erickson with a double down the right field line, and came around to score two batters later on a Josh Gray (Eliot, Maine) RBI-single. Gray was the only Terrier to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
With the victory, Castleton advances to play Husson tomorrow at 2:00 pm in the marquee matchup of the conference tournament, and by way of a coin toss, Castleton will be the home team. Thomas College will take on the University of Maine at Farmington in a win-or-go-home matchup tomorrow at 10:00 am at Husson's Winkin Complex
