CASTLETON, Vt. – The coaches and student-athletes from the Castleton University spring sports gathered at the Casella Theater Monday night to celebrate their success and honor those who led their teams over the past two months.
On behalf of Castleton University President Dave Wolk, Scott Dikeman, Dean of Administration, presented the President's Cup for Academic Excellence, awarded each season to the team with the highest cumulative grade point average. The women's softball team received the award thanks to a cumulative GPA above 3.5.
Led by the best pitching staff in collegiate baseball at any level, the Spartans has already won 30 games for the third consecutive year and cruised to the regular season North Atlantic Conference title with a 21-3 league record. Team MVP Davis Mikell has made an immediate impact both hitting and pitching, as the freshman is batting .322 with seven home runs and 28 RBI while also going 5-1 with a 0.92 ERA and 50 strikeouts in just 39 innings pitched.
The Castleton men's lacrosse team earned non-conference victories over Curry, Mount Ida, and Southern Maine this year before ending the regular season with three straight conference wins to finish second in the NAC with a 6-1 league record and receive a bye into the conference tournament semifinals. Brandon Myron has been selected as the team MVP after taking over the starting goalkeeper duties, earning 14 saves in each of his first two starts, and posting a goals against average under 10 (9.77).
For the sixth straight year, the women's lacrosse team went through the conference schedule without a loss, winning the regular season NAC title and advancing to the championship game of the NAC Tournament with its second victory over Colby-Sawyer in the span of nine days. Tiffany Danyow has notched 10 hat tricks so far this season to lead Castleton with 48 goals and 29 assists for 77 total points, earning team MVP honors.
The Castleton softball team finished second in the North Atlantic Conference with a 10-2 league mark as part of an overall record of 18-8-1. The Spartans put together an eight-game winning streak down the stretch, including a victory over regular season NAC champion Husson. Timi Carone has been named team MVP after posting a .407 batting average with 37 hits, 27 runs scored, four triples, 22 runs batted in, and 13 stolen bases during the regular season.
The Castleton men's tennis team opened the season with eight wins in its first nine matches, including a 5-4 victory in the season opener over Norwich. The Spartans finished the season with a 9-4 overall record, including a 4-2 conference record to finish third in the NAC East. Team MVP Seth Marcil was named First Team All-NAC East in singles, Second Team All-NAC East in doubles, and to the NAC East Sportsmanship Team after posting 4-2 records in both singles and doubles during conference play.
Men's Outdoor Track and Field
The Castleton men's outdoor track and field team capped its season with a fourth place finish at the NAC Championships. Austin Beauregard won the NAC title in the 110-meter hurdles, while Tayler Larmie set a meet- and program-record in winning the hammer throw. Grandon Smith earned team MVP honors as he continued his strong year with a NAC title in the 800-meter run and a program record performance in the 5000-meter run.
Women's Outdoor Track and Field
At the recent NAC Championships, the Castleton women's outdoor track and field team finished in third place thanks to numerous scoring performances from several student-athletes on the roster. Brielle DeBaise won the NAC title in the discus throw, finished second in the hammer throw, and also led the Spartans in the shot put and javelin throw, as her throwing prowess this season earned her team MVP honors.
