Castleton Well-Represented on Fall 2016 NAC All-Academic Team

WATERVILLE, Maine – Castleton University placed 25 student-athletes on the North Atlantic Conference All-Academic Team for Fall 2016, as the conference office announced Tuesday the 207 student-athletes throughout the league who were named to the squad.

The NAC All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes on varsity sports teams who have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Student-athletes must also have reached sophomore academic standing and competed in a minimum of two years of varsity competition at their institution. The Fall All-Academic Team represents the sports of men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, men's and women's soccer, women's tennis, and women's volleyball.

Among the Castleton honorees are Grandon Smith, the NAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Year, Thomas Kirk, the NAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Year, and Nicole Wershoven, the NAC Women's Soccer Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Wershoven is also one of five Spartan student-athletes on the All-Academic Team who were named to the NAC Sportsmanship Team of their respective sport, along with Elizabeth Bassette of women's cross country, Cassidy Auger of field hockey, Kayla Zsido of women's tennis, and Alex Madsen of women's volleyball.

In addition, Bassette and Wershoven earlier received First Team All-NAC honors for their performances in competition, as did Smith, Kirk, Bassette's cross country teammate Molly O'Callaghan, and Emily Lowell from field hockey. Paul Phillips of the men's soccer team and Jessica Binkowski from the women's soccer team were Second Team All-NAC honorees after the 2016 season.

In total, women's cross country boasted four honorees, with Tina Bennett and Ali Nelson also receiving the honor. Field hockey also had four representatives, including Rachel Holland and Sarah Wells, while Andrew Meister was the third honoree from the Castleton men's soccer team.

The Spartan women's soccer team placed nine players on the All-Academic Team, including Kiley Baran, Marissa Benson, Eva Clark, Kaitlin Cole, Kinnan Latremore, Megan O'Shea, and Kate Steller. Jess Grace and Kimberly Jackson joined Madsen as honorees from the Castleton women's volleyball team.
