CASTLETON, Vt. - The Castleton University Department of Athletics honored the 2015-16 spring sports teams at an awards ceremony on Monday, April 25. Castleton President Dave Wolk presented the President's Cup for Academic Excellence, while MVP's were also honored for each sport.
The event kicked off with the presentation of the President's Cup for Academic Excellence. This coveted award is given out each season to the team with the highest cumulative grade point average. Four of the seven athletic teams boasted a team GPA of at least a 3.25. Women's lacrosse finished third with a 3.31, while softball was second with a 3.34. Men's tennis claimed the President's Trophy with a 3.51 cumlative GPA, becoming just the second men's team to earn the award. Men's hockey had won it previously.
The Spartans are currently in the midst of a 16-game winning streak to improve their record to 22-9 overall with the NAC Tournament set to take place in just over a week. Team MVP Nick Swim leads the team and the conference with a .438 batting average. He is also in the midst of a 23-game hitting streak.
The team is currently 9-6 and 6-1 in conference play. Castleton will enter the NAC Tournament next weekend as the No. 2 seed. Team MVP Matt Levins is a co-captain for his work on the field and off. On senior day he had a career-high four points on three goals and one assist.
Castleton is currently 10-5 overall and has clinched the top seed in the NAC Tournament for the fifth consecutive year. Team MVP Meghan Els has been the anchor of the team in goal, leading the conference and ranking fifth nationally with a 56.2 save percentage, while also ranking in the top-20 in saves per game.
Castleton is 13-11 entering the final week of the regular season, and 6-2 in conference play. Team MVP Brittany Brayman has been a rock for the team, playing numerous defensive positions this year while batting third in the lineup and leading the conference with 26 RBI.
The Spartans started the year 6-0 and are 10-3 as they enter the NAC Tournament this weekend. Team MVP Seth Marcil has played at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles all year long and been a big reason for the team's success this season.
Men's Track and Field
Castleton concludes its first regular season on Sunday at the NAC Championships. Team MVP Brandon Poulin has led the team in the 400-meters while leading the team in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays.
Women's Track and Field
Castleton concludes its first-ever outdoor season on Sunday at the NAC Championships. Team MVP Brielle DeBaise has led the team in throwing events, with top-ten finishes in the shot put, discuss and hammer throws throughout the season.
